Minimally invasive treatment for kidney cysts causing pain, infection, or obstruction.
Book a ConsultationMost kidney cysts do not require surgical treatment. They are often found incidentally and cause no symptoms. However, if a cyst is causing complications such as pain, infection, or obstruction of urine drainage, treatment may be necessary.
The first option is usually percutaneous drainage, where the cyst is drained using a thin needle inserted through the skin under ultrasound guidance. If this approach does not resolve the problem, a laparoscopic drainage may be recommended.
During a laparoscopic procedure, one 1.5 cm incision is made for the laparoscope, and two 0.5 cm incisions are made for the surgical instruments in the flank area. This compares to a 15 to 20 cm incision in open surgery. Part of the cyst wall is removed during the procedure to reduce the chance of the cyst refilling with fluid.
