Laparoscopic surgery for pelvi-ureteral junction obstruction to restore normal urine drainage.
Book a ConsultationThis operation is performed for patients diagnosed with congenital pelvi-ureteral junction obstruction. In this condition, there is a narrowing of the upper portion of the ureter, which is the muscular tube that moves urine from the kidney to the bladder. Patients may experience pain or recurrent urinary tract infections as a result.
During a laparoscopic pyeloplasty, one 1.5 cm incision is made for the laparoscope, and two 0.5 cm incisions are made for the surgical instruments, either in the flank or the abdomen. This is compared to a 15 to 20 cm incision used in open surgery.
The narrowed section of the ureter is excised, and the healthy ureter is then sutured back to the collecting system of the kidney. The goal is to restore normal urine drainage.
